The Odyssey, Part 3: Story Summary

This is Part Three of The Odyssey, The Monsters of the Sea. On LITIM, we tell this very old Greek story again in easy English, in five parts.

In Part Two, Odysseus lost eleven of his twelve ships. Then he stayed for a whole year with Circe, a goddess and a witch. When he finally asked to leave, she told him that he must first visit the land of the dead.

Part Three is the darkest part of the story. At the edge of the world, where the sun never shines, Odysseus meets the ghost of a blind prophet, who tells him what is waiting on the way home. He also meets a ghost he did not expect to see.

Then come the monsters of the sea. The Sirens sing a song so beautiful that sailors forget everything. Charybdis drinks down the sea three times a day. And Scylla waits on a cliff with six long necks and six heads.

After the monsters, there is a green island where the cattle of the Sun God eat grass. The prophet gives one warning about it: do not hurt those animals.

At the start of Part Three, Odysseus has one ship and its men. At the end, he is alone on the island of a goddess. How does he lose everything? That is the story of Part Three.

The Land of the Dead

Odysseus sails to the edge of the world, where the sun never shines. There he does what Circe told him. He digs a hole in the ground and offers sheep to the dead.

Thousands of ghosts come up from the dark: old men, young girls, and soldiers still wearing their armor. Odysseus is afraid, but he holds his sword and waits.

At last Tiresias, the blind prophet, appears. His words are hard. Poseidon is still angry. On the way, there is an island where the cattle of the Sun God eat grass, and nobody must hurt them. If they do, Odysseus will lose his ship and all his men. He will reach home very late, alone, on someone else's ship, and he will find trouble in his house.

In Part One, the blind giant prayed for almost the same thing.

Then Odysseus sees his mother. She was alive when he left for Troy. "I waited and waited for you to come home," she says. "In the end, my sadness killed me."

He reaches out to hold her. Three times he tries, and three times she passes through his arms like smoke. He has fought a giant and a witch. Here, there is nothing to fight.

The Song and the Six Heads

Back on her island, Circe tells Odysseus about two dangers. He meets them in two very different ways.

The first is the Sirens. They sing so beautifully that sailors forget everything and sail toward them, and the bones of many men lie around their island. Odysseus puts wax in his men's ears. But he wants to hear the song himself, so they tie him to the mast.

What do the Sirens sing about? Not gold, and not love. "We know everything that happened at Troy," they sing. "We know everything in the world." For the cleverest man in Greece, nothing could be sweeter. He shouts to his men to untie him. They cannot hear him, and they tie him even more tightly.

The second danger is a narrow passage between two cliffs. Circe's advice is terrible. Sail close to Scylla, and she will take six men. Go near Charybdis, and everyone will die.

Odysseus chooses Scylla, and he does not tell his men about her. Six heads come down from the cliff, and six men call out his name for the last time. The story says it was the saddest thing he saw in all his travels.

The Cattle of the Sun

After Scylla, the ship comes to a beautiful green island. Odysseus hears the cattle of the Sun God and remembers the prophet's words. "Let's not stop here," he says. But his men are too tired. "We will stay only one night," says Eurylochus.

They promise not to touch the cattle. Then a strong wind begins to blow, and it does not stop for a whole month. Soon all the food is gone.

One day, Odysseus goes off alone to pray, and he falls asleep. In Part Two, the men opened the bag of winds while he was sleeping. Now it happens again. "It is terrible to die of hunger," Eurylochus says. "We will say sorry to the gods later." When Odysseus wakes up, he smells meat cooking.

Zeus sends a storm, and his lightning breaks the ship into pieces. All the men die. Odysseus left Troy with twelve ships. Now he has one piece of wood.

The waves carry him to the island of Calypso, a beautiful goddess. She loves him, and she offers to make him a god who will never grow old and never die. But he only wants to go home. For seven years, he sits on the beach every day and cries for Ithaca.

Into the Dark

John

Cale, welcome back. Last time, you said Odysseus should have stayed in the soft bed.

Cale

I still think so. Circe told him to visit the land of the dead. Who says yes to that?

John

A man with no other way home. Only one person can help him: the ghost of a blind prophet called Tiresias.

Cale

So he has to ask a dead man for directions. Where is this place?

John

At the edge of the world, where the sun never shines.

Cale

Of course it is. And after that? Please tell me Part Three gets happier.

John

It doesn't. The title is The Monsters of the Sea.

Cale

Monsters. More than one. How many?

John

Three. The Sirens, who sing. Charybdis, who drinks the sea. And Scylla, who has six heads.

Cale

Six heads! The Cyclops had one eye, and that was enough trouble.

John

And after the monsters comes the most dangerous place of all. A green island with some cows on it.

Cale

Cows? John, he has met giants and a witch. How can cows be dangerous?

John

They belong to the Sun God. The prophet gives one warning: do not hurt those animals.

Cale

One rule, and a ship full of hungry men. I think I know how this ends.

John

At the start of Part Three, Odysseus has one ship. At the end, he has none.

Cale

None! All right. Let's go down into the dark first.

A Ghost Like Smoke

John

So Odysseus digs a hole in the ground and offers sheep to the dead. And the ghosts come up.

Cale

How many ghosts?

John

Thousands. Old men, young girls, and soldiers still wearing their armor.

Cale

Still in their armor. That's a sad little detail. And Odysseus just stands there?

John

He's afraid, but he holds his sword and waits for Tiresias.

Cale

A sword? Against ghosts? What is he going to do with it?

John

Not much. But at last the prophet comes, and the news is bad. Poseidon is still angry.

Cale

We knew that already. What about the way home?

John

He will come to an island with the cattle of the Sun God. If his men hurt them, he will lose his ship and all his men.

Cale

And if that happens, does he still get home?

John

Yes. But very late, alone, on someone else's ship. And he will find trouble in his house.

Cale

Wait. Late, alone, and in trouble. I've heard that before! That was the giant's prayer in Part One.

John

Almost the same words. Then Odysseus sees one more ghost, and the story says his heart stopped. It's his mother.

Cale

His mother? Did he know she was dead?

John

No. She was alive when he left for Troy. He asks, "How did you die, Mother?" And she says, "I waited and waited for you to come home. In the end, my sadness killed me."

Cale

Oh. So it wasn't the war, and it wasn't a monster. She died from waiting for him.

John

He reaches out to hold her. Three times he tries, and three times she passes through his arms like smoke.

Cale

I was ready for monsters today, John. I wasn't ready for that. He can trick a giant, but he can't hold his own mother.

Don't Tell the Men

John

Back on her island, Circe tells him about the Sirens. They sing so beautifully that sailors forget everything and sail toward them.

Cale

And what happens to those sailors?

John

Circe says the bones of many men lie around the island.

Cale

So it's a very pretty way to die. What's the plan?

John

Wax in the men's ears, so they can't hear anything. But Odysseus wants to hear the song himself. So they tie him to the mast.

Cale

Of course he does. Everyone else gets wax, and the captain gets a concert.

John

And do you know what the Sirens sing? "We know everything that happened at Troy. We know everything in the world."

Cale

That's all? No gold? No beautiful islands?

John

Only knowing things. Think about who is listening.

Cale

Ah. The cleverest man in Greece. They know just what he wants. That's a little scary.

John

He shouts to his men to untie him. They can't hear, so two of them stand up and tie him even more tightly.

Cale

Good men. That may be the best thing they do in the whole story. What's next?

John

A narrow passage between two cliffs. Charybdis drinks down the sea under one. Scylla waits on the other. Circe said: sail close to Scylla and lose six men, or go near Charybdis and lose everyone.

Cale

Six or everyone. That's not a choice, that's a math problem. What do the men say?

John

Nothing. He doesn't tell them about Scylla. He's afraid they will stop rowing and hide.

Cale

Again! With the bag of winds, I said he should have told them. And this time he hides it on purpose.

John

Then six long necks come down from the cliff, and six heads take six men. They call out his name for the last time.

Cale

They call his name, and he knew all the time. Maybe he was right, John. But I couldn't row for that captain again.

One Man Left

John

After Scylla, they come to a beautiful green island. Odysseus hears the cattle and says, "Let's not stop here."

Cale

Good. For once, he's careful. So they sail past?

John

No. One man says, "We need to rest. We will stay only one night." It's Eurylochus.

Cale

Eurylochus! The careful man who stayed outside Circe's house. My favorite person in this story.

John

Odysseus makes them promise not to touch the cattle. But a strong wind blows for a whole month, and all the food is gone.

Cale

A month of hunger, with fat cows walking past every day. That's hard.

John

Then Odysseus goes off alone to pray to the gods, and he falls asleep.

Cale

No! Not again! Every time this man closes his eyes, something terrible happens.

John

And Eurylochus says to the others, "It is terrible to die of hunger. We will say sorry to the gods later."

Cale

My favorite person! "Say sorry later." You can't do that with a god.

John

You can't. Zeus sends a storm, and his lightning breaks the ship into pieces. All the men fall into the sea and die.

Cale

All of them. Twelve ships left Troy, and now there's one man holding a piece of wood.

John

The waves carry him to the island of Calypso, a goddess. She falls in love with him. She says, "I will make you a god. You will never grow old and never die."

Cale

That's a good offer. After the land of the dead, I would think about it.

John

He doesn't. For seven years, he sits on the beach every day, looks out at the sea, and cries for Ithaca.

Cale

Seven years. With Circe, he forgot his home for a whole year. Now he has lost everything, and he doesn't forget it for one day.

John

That's the man this story is about. And in Part Four, the gods finally remember him.

Cale

It's about time. A man with no ship and no men needs a little help. See you in Part Four.
