The Odyssey, Part 2: Story Summary
This is Part Two of The Odyssey, The Witch's Island. On LITIM, we tell this very old Greek story again in easy English, in five parts.
In Part One, Odysseus escaped from the cave of the Cyclops. But he shouted his real name, and now Poseidon, the god of the sea, is his enemy. He still has twelve ships, and he still wants only one thing: to go home to Ithaca.
In Part Two, he visits three places. The first is the floating island of Aeolus, the keeper of the winds. Aeolus gives him a leather bag with all the strong winds inside. Ten days later, the men can see the fires on the beaches of Ithaca. And then they open the bag.
The second place is a quiet harbor with high cliffs. Giants live there, and they throw huge rocks down at the ships. Eleven ships are lost. Only one is left.
The third place is the island of Circe, a goddess and a witch. She turns men into pigs. But she becomes a friend, and Odysseus and his men stay with her for a whole year.
Why do the men open the bag? And why does a man who wants to go home stay for a year? That is the story of Part Two.
The Bag of Winds
The saddest moment in Part Two comes very early. Odysseus is almost home, and then he is not.
Aeolus has shut all the strong winds inside a leather bag. Only the gentle west wind is left outside, and it carries the ships toward Ithaca. For nine days and nine nights, Odysseus does not sleep. He holds the ropes of his ship himself, because he does not want anyone else to make a mistake.
On the tenth day, they see Ithaca. They are so close that they can see people making fires on the beach. And there, at last, Odysseus falls asleep.
His men look at the bag. They do not know what is inside. They think it is gold and silver, and they think their captain wants to keep it all. "We fought in the war too," they say, "and we are going home with empty hands." So they open it.
The storm carries them all the way back to Aeolus. This time he will not help. "The gods must hate you," he says.
Nobody in this scene is a monster. A tired man falls asleep, and his men do not trust him. That is all it takes.
One Ship Left
After the bag of winds, there is no wind at all. The men have to row. Six days later, they find a harbor with high cliffs on both sides.
It looks safe. Eleven ships go inside. But Odysseus keeps his own ship outside, tied to a rock. The story does not tell us why. Maybe, after the cave of the Cyclops, he has learned to be careful.
He sends three men to find out who lives there. They meet a girl who is getting water, and she takes them to her father's house. Her father is the king of the Laestrygonians. He is a giant, and he is hungry. He eats one of the men.
Then thousands of giants come to the top of the cliffs. They throw huge rocks down at the ships, and they catch the men in the water like fish.
Odysseus cuts his rope with his sword. "Row for your lives!" he shouts. His ship escapes. The other eleven do not.
He left Troy with twelve ships. Now he has one. The story tells this in only a few lines, and then it says, "Sad and afraid, they sailed on."
The Witch and the Year
On the next island, a stone house stands in the woods. Wolves and lions walk around it, but they wag their tails like dogs. Inside, a woman is singing. She is Circe, a goddess and a witch.
She gives the men a drink of cheese, honey, and wine, with magic mixed in. Then she touches them with her stick, and they turn into pigs. This is the cruel part: inside, they still have human minds.
Odysseus goes to save them alone. On the way, the god Hermes gives him a plant with a black root and a white flower. With it, Circe's magic does not work on him. He pulls out his sword and makes her promise to do no harm. She turns the pigs back into men.
And then the story changes. Circe becomes a kind host. There is good food, there are warm baths and soft beds, and the men stay for a whole year.
In Part One, a sweet fruit made men forget their homes. Here, no magic is needed. A pleasant life is enough. In the end, it is the men who ask Odysseus, "Have you forgotten Ithaca?"
Almost Home
Cale, welcome back. Do you remember where we left Odysseus?
On his ship, shouting his name at a blind giant. Not his best idea. And the giant's father is the god of the sea.
Right. Poseidon is now his enemy. So how do you think Part Two begins?
With a storm, I'm sure. A big, angry one.
No. It begins with a month of food, wine, and stories.
A month? What about going home?
He's a guest on a floating island. The host is Aeolus, the keeper of the winds, and he is very kind.
A kind host! After the Cyclops, that's a nice change. Nobody gets eaten?
Nobody gets eaten. And when Odysseus leaves, Aeolus gives him the best present in the whole story: a bag with all the strong winds shut inside.
So only the good wind is left, and it blows him home. That sounds too easy.
It nearly works. Ten days later, they can see Ithaca.
"Nearly." I don't like that word. Something goes wrong, doesn't it?
It does. Part Two has three places: the island of the winds, a harbor full of giants, and the island of a witch called Circe.
More giants? He just escaped from one!
These are worse. At the start of Part Two, he has twelve ships. After the harbor, he has one.
One ship! All right. Tell me about this bag first.
Who Opened the Bag?
So, the bag. For nine days and nine nights, Odysseus doesn't sleep. He holds the ropes of his ship himself.
Nine days without sleep? Why doesn't he let someone else hold them?
The story says he didn't want anyone else to make a mistake.
So he doesn't trust his men.
He wants to get home. And on the tenth day, they see Ithaca. They can even see people making fires on the beach.
And that is the moment he falls asleep. Of course it is.
Then his men open the bag. They think it's full of gold and silver.
I know I should be angry at them. But listen to what they say: "We fought in the war too, and we are going home with empty hands."
You think they have a point?
A small one. Ten years of war, and nothing to show their families. And their captain has a secret bag.
But it wasn't gold. It was the way home.
Then he should have told them! "Friends, this bag is full of wind. Please don't touch it." One sentence.
That's fair. The story never says he told them what was inside.
He doesn't trust them with the ropes, and they don't trust him with the bag. Everybody on that ship has the same problem.
And the winds carry them all the way back. When Odysseus wakes up, he thinks about jumping into the sea.
That's the first time I really felt sorry for him.
He asks Aeolus for help again. And Aeolus says, "I will not help a man the gods hate."
That's cold. But I would keep my winds, too. He already lost the first bag.
The Harbor of Giants
Now there's no wind, so they have to row. After six days, they find a harbor with high cliffs on both sides.
High cliffs on both sides. I've seen enough movies. Don't go in.
Eleven ships go in. But Odysseus keeps his own ship outside, tied to a rock.
Wait. Only his own ship? Did he know something?
The story doesn't say. I think he's being careful. Remember the cave. He walked in, and six men died.
So this time he is careful with one ship, and the other eleven go inside. That's not much better, John.
No, it isn't. He sends three men to look around. They meet a girl who is getting water.
A girl getting water. That sounds safe enough.
She takes them to her father's house. Her father is the king. And he is a giant.
Let me guess. He's hungry.
He eats one of them. Then thousands of giants come to the top of the cliffs and throw huge rocks down at the ships.
Thousands? The Cyclops was only one giant, and that was hard enough.
The ships break into pieces. And the story says the giants caught the men in the water "like fish."
That's horrible. I can't make a joke about that one.
Odysseus cuts his rope with his sword and shouts, "Row for your lives!" His ship gets away. Only his.
Twelve ships left Troy. Now there's one. And in Part One, I was angry about six men.
And the story doesn't stop to cry. It just says, "Sad and afraid, they sailed on."
Sad and afraid. Yes. I think I would stay on the ship for the rest of the story.
A Year with the Witch
The last island. A stone house in the woods, with wolves and lions walking around it.
And they wag their tails like dogs. That's the scariest part for me. A lion should not be friendly.
One man agrees with you. His name is Eurylochus. Everyone else goes into the house, and he stays outside.
Finally! A careful man. He's my favorite person in this story.
Inside, Circe gives the men a drink, touches them with her magic stick, and turns them into pigs.
With human minds inside. They know they are pigs. That's worse than the giants.
So Odysseus takes his sword and walks to the house alone.
Alone, against a witch, with a sword. And that works?
Not by itself. On the way, the god Hermes gives him a plant. If he eats it, her magic can't touch him.
So he wins because a god helps him. Isn't that cheating?
Hermes says it himself: "You cannot fight Circe's magic without help." Even the cleverest man needs help sometimes.
All right. So he saves his men, and they leave the island at once. Yes?
No. Circe becomes kind. Good food, warm baths, soft beds. They stay for a whole year.
A year! Last time, we heard that this is the story of a man who never forgets where he wants to go.
We did hear that.
He forgot for a whole year! His own men have to ask him, "Have you forgotten Ithaca?"
And then he remembers his wife and his son. But Circe says he must first visit the land of the dead. That's Part Three.
The land of the dead. He should have stayed in the soft bed. See you in Part Three.
