The Odyssey, Part 1: Story Summary
The Odyssey is one of the oldest stories in the world. It was first told in ancient Greece about twenty-seven hundred years ago, and people say a poet called Homer made it. It is a very long poem, so on LITIM we tell it again in easy English, in five parts. This is Part One, The Giant's Cave.
The hero is Odysseus, the king of a small island called Ithaca. For ten years, the Greeks fight a war against the city of Troy. They win at last because of his clever idea: a huge wooden horse with soldiers hidden inside.
Now Odysseus wants only one thing: to go home to his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus. He sets sail with twelve ships. He thinks the trip will take a few weeks. It will take ten more years.
First, a storm pushes the ships to the land of the Lotus-Eaters, where a sweet fruit makes men forget their homes. Then they come to a cave full of cheese and young lambs. Its owner is a Cyclops, a giant with only one eye, and he eats his guests.
How can a man escape from a giant like that? And how can one small word, "Nobody," save his life? That is the story of Part One.
The Fruit That Makes You Forget
The first danger on the way home is not a monster. It is a fruit.
After nine days of storm, the ships reach the land of the Lotus-Eaters. The people there are friendly. They do not fight. They only give the visitors a sweet fruit called the lotus.
But the men who eat it forget everything. They forget their homes. They forget their families. They only want to stay and eat more.
This is a quiet kind of danger. Nobody is hurt, and nobody is afraid. The men are happy. But a man who forgets his home will never go back to it, and for Odysseus, going home is everything.
So he does a hard thing. He pulls the crying men back to the ships and ties them under the benches. "Row!" he shouts. "Row fast, before anyone else eats this fruit!"
It is a short scene, but it tells us what this long story is about. The Odyssey is the story of a man who never forgets where he wants to go.
My Name Is Nobody
In the cave of the Cyclops, Odysseus makes one mistake and has one great idea.
The mistake comes first. His men want to take some cheese and leave. But Odysseus wants to meet the owner, because in those days good hosts gave presents to their guests. This host is different. Polyphemus puts a huge rock across the door and eats two of the men for dinner.
That night, Odysseus takes out his sword. Then he stops. If the giant dies, who will move the rock? Killing him would kill them all. So Odysseus must think, not fight.
Here is his idea. He gives the giant strong wine and tells him, "My name is Nobody." When the giant falls asleep, the men push a hot, sharp pole into his one eye. The giant screams, and the other Cyclopes come running. "Is someone hurting you?" they ask. "Nobody is hurting me!" he shouts. So they go home.
In the morning, the men escape under the bellies of the sheep. Odysseus does not win because he is strong. He wins because he is clever, and because he can wait.
The Name and the Curse
Part One does not end with the escape. It ends with a mistake that changes everything.
The men are back on the ship and rowing away. They are safe. The giant is blind, and he does not know who hurt him. He only knows the name "Nobody."
But Odysseus cannot stay quiet. He shouts across the water: "If anyone asks who took your eye, tell them it was Odysseus, king of Ithaca!"
Why does he do it? He is proud. He wants the giant to know who beat him. For a Greek hero, a great act needs a great name.
It is a terrible mistake. Now the giant knows his name, and the giant has a powerful father: Poseidon, the god of the sea. Polyphemus prays, "Never let Odysseus reach his home. And if he does get home, let him arrive late, alone, and in trouble."
Poseidon hears his son. Odysseus is on a ship, far from home, and now the sea itself is his enemy. The cleverest man in Greece was saved by hiding his name. He is in trouble because he could not hide it for long.
Talking About The Odyssey
Cale, do you know The Odyssey?
I know the name. It's very old and very long, right? I've never read it.
Most people haven't. It's a poem from ancient Greece, about twenty-seven hundred years old.
Twenty-seven hundred years! And people still read it?
They do. People say a poet called Homer made it. And really, it's a simple story: a man is trying to get home.
That's all? Just going home?
That's all. His name is Odysseus. He's the king of a small island called Ithaca, and he has been away at war for ten years.
The war with Troy? The one with the wooden horse?
Yes. And the horse was his idea. He isn't the strongest of the Greeks, but he is the cleverest.
So the war is over, and he sails home. How long can that take?
He thinks a few weeks. It takes ten years.
Ten years! Did he lose his map?
No. He meets storms, monsters, and angry gods. In Part One alone, there's a fruit that makes you forget your home, and a giant with one eye.
A one-eyed giant. Now I'm listening.
And his wife and his son are waiting for him the whole time. The boy was a baby when he left.
So it's a monster story and a family story at the same time. All right, let's start with Part One.
Why Did He Stay in the Cave?
Let's talk about the cave. Odysseus and twelve of his men walk in, and nobody is home.
But the cave is full of cheese, milk, and lambs. And his men have a good idea: take some food and go.
And Odysseus says no. He wants to wait and meet the owner.
This is where I get angry at him. Whose fault is all this? His!
That's a little hard on him. In those days, a good host gave presents to his guests. He was hoping for a welcome.
He walked into a stranger's house and ate the cheese! I wouldn't give him a present either.
Fair point. But I think it's more than the present. He says, "I want to know who lives here." He's curious.
Curious. Six of his men are eaten because he is curious.
Yes. And the story doesn't hide that. The same mind that thought of the wooden horse also walks into this cave.
So his best point and his worst point are the same thing.
I think so. Remember the Lotus-Eaters, just before this? The men eat the fruit and forget their homes.
I liked them, actually. Friendly people, free fruit, no fighting.
But Odysseus ties his men to the ship and leaves at once. There, he's careful. He knows that forgetting home is dangerous.
And then, in the very next place, he forgets to be careful.
Exactly. He can say no to the sweet fruit, but he can't say no to a question.
"Who lives here?" Well, now he knows. A giant who eats people.
And a giant who has just put a huge rock across the door.
Next time, Odysseus, listen to your men. Take the cheese and run.
The Nobody Trick
So they're shut in the cave. The giant eats two men for dinner and goes to sleep.
And Odysseus has a sword. Why doesn't he just kill him right there?
He wants to. He takes out his sword. And then he stops and thinks.
Thinks about what? The giant is asleep!
About the door. There's a huge rock across it. Even twenty wagons couldn't move it. Only the giant can.
Oh. So if the giant dies, they all die in the cave with him.
Right. So he waits. And waiting is terrible, because the giant eats two more men in the morning and two more in the evening.
That's six men. I couldn't just sit there and make a plan.
But the plan is very good. First, the wine. Then, the name. He tells the giant, "My name is Nobody."
I didn't understand that part at first. Why such a strange name?
Wait for it. They burn the giant's eye with the hot pole. He screams, and the other giants come running.
And they ask, "Is someone hurting you?"
And he shouts, "Nobody is hurting me!"
Ha! So they say, "Then be quiet," and they go home. That's a joke. A joke that is twenty-seven hundred years old.
Maybe one of the oldest word jokes we have. And it still works in English.
But here's my question. Did he plan the whole thing from the start? Or was he just lucky that they came and asked?
I think he planned it. He gave the name before he did anything else. He was thinking three steps ahead.
Three steps ahead, and then out the door under a sheep. All right, I'll say it: that part is clever.
Why Did He Shout His Name?
Here's the part I want to ask you about, Cale. They're on the ship. They're safe. And Odysseus shouts his real name.
"Tell them it was Odysseus, king of Ithaca!" Honestly? I understand him.
You do? I think it's the worst mistake in the whole story.
Think about it. He did something amazing. He beat a giant with a bowl of wine and a joke. And who gets the credit? Nobody!
That's the point of the trick. The name "Nobody" kept him alive.
But he doesn't want to be Nobody for ever. Nobody does. Sorry, I mean, no one does.
Very good. But look at what it costs him. The giant now knows his name, and the giant's father is Poseidon.
The god of the sea. And Odysseus is going home by ship. Yes, that's bad.
The giant prays: never let him reach his home, or let him arrive late, alone, and in trouble.
"Late, alone, and in trouble." That is a very careful prayer.
And Poseidon hears it. One shout, and the trip home becomes ten years long.
All right, it was a mistake. But I feel a little sorry for the giant, too.
For Polyphemus? He ate six men.
He did, and that's terrible. But look at it from his side. Strangers come into his home, eat his cheese, make him drunk, and take his only eye.
After he shut them in and started eating them.
Yes, yes. I'm only saying, at the end he is calling to his father. Even the monster has a family in this story.
That's true. And so does Odysseus, and they are still waiting for him. Next time, in Part Two, he meets the keeper of the winds, and a witch.
A witch! He really should have stayed quiet. See you in Part Two.
