Commentary 2
The Emperor, a shadow, and tears at the moon
The Emperor sent someone to Kaguya-hime. But Kaguya-hime will not meet him. Even promising to make the old man an important person did no good. So the Emperor pretended to go hunting and suddenly went into the house. In the light, a beautiful person is sitting. When the Emperor took hold of her sleeve and tried to take her back with him, Kaguya-hime quickly became a shadow and disappeared. The Emperor thought, "This person is not an ordinary person." And so he stopped trying to take her back with him. After that, for three years, the two sent each other letters.
From the spring after three years had passed, Kaguya-hime began to look at the moon and think a lot. When the full moon of the eighth month came near, she began to cry even in front of people. And at last she told the truth. "I am not a person of this country. I am a person of the Capital of the Moon. On the fifteenth of this month, they will come from the moon for me." The Capital of the Moon is a big city on the moon.
The people of the Moon Capital are very beautiful, and they do not grow old. They say they have no troubles, either. Even so, Kaguya-hime said that she was not happy to go back, and that she was very sad to part from the old man and the old woman.
Commentary 3
Two thousand soldiers, a robe of feathers, and Mount Fuji
Because the old man asked, the Emperor sent two thousand soldiers. The old woman was holding Kaguya-hime in her arms in a room at the back of the house. The old man locked the door and sat down in front of it.
But in that light, no one can fight. They do not have the strength to draw their bows. Everyone is just looking, blankly. The door they had shut opened, though no one touched it.
The people of the moon had two boxes. In one, there is a piece of clothing called the robe of feathers from heaven. In the other, there is a medicine that keeps you from dying if you drink it. They say that when you put on this robe, your heart changes.
Kaguya-hime said, "Please wait a little." Then she wrote a letter and a poem to the Emperor, and put the medicine with them. The poem meant, "Now, as I put on the robe of feathers, I am remembering you strongly." When she finished writing, the robe was put on her. Then her feeling that the old man was poor and dear to her also disappeared. Kaguya-hime got into a carriage and went up into the sky with about a hundred people of the moon.
The old man and the old woman cried very hard, and then they got sick and had to stay in bed. The Emperor read the letter and asked, "Which mountain is closest to heaven?" The Emperor said that if he could not see Kaguya-hime again, he did not need a medicine that keeps you from dying. And he had the letter and the medicine burned at the top of that mountain. That mountain is Mount Fuji. The story ends by saying that the smoke still goes up into the clouds today.
Commentary 4
Three things to notice
There are three things in this story I want you to notice.
The first is the word game at the end. The story says that the mountain got the name "Fuji" because many soldiers climbed it. But you can hear another word too. In Japanese, not dying is called "fushi." It is the mountain of "Fuji," where the medicine of "fushi" was burned. The sounds are very similar.
The second is that Kaguya-hime changed. In the second part, when she heard that a man had died, Kaguya-hime felt only "a little" sorry for him. But in the third part, she cries as she looks at the moon, and says she is very sad. While Kaguya-hime was living in our world, she changed.
The third is her sin. Someone who seemed to be the King of the Moon said to the old man, "Kaguya-hime committed a sin, so she stayed with you for a while." To commit a sin means to do something bad. But it is not written anywhere what the sin was. That person calls our world an "unclean place." But for Kaguya-hime, it was a place she did not want to leave, so much that she cried. Even so, after the robe of feathers was put on her, Kaguya-hime went back from that "unclean place" without thinking anything.
Kaguya-hime forgot her sad feelings and went back to the moon. Is she happy?

About The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Part 3
It is the night of the fifteenth day of the eighth month. There are a thousand soldiers on the roof, and a thousand more on the wall. They are two thousand soldiers sent by the Emperor. They are all holding bows and looking at the sky. In the middle of the night, everything around became brighter than the daytime. It is a strong light, as if there were ten full moons. Through that light, people riding on clouds come down.
