Commentary 1

About The Spider's Thread

It is morning. This is Paradise. The Buddha is walking slowly by a pond, alone. Many white lotus flowers are blooming in the pond, and they smell very nice. The water of the pond is very clear, and far down below, Hell could be seen.

Today's story is "The Spider's Thread." The person who wrote it is Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. It came out in a children's magazine in 1918. It is the first story Akutagawa wrote for children. It is a very short story, and there are only three places in it. Paradise, Hell, and then Paradise again.

It is said that this story is based on another one. It is a story written by an American. In that story, the Buddha talks with the man in Hell. But the Buddha in Akutagawa's story says nothing until the very end.

Commentary 2

A thief, a spider, and a silver thread

In Hell, there was a man called Kandata. He was a bad thief who had killed people and set fire to houses. But Kandata, too, did one good thing. In a forest, when he almost stepped on a small spider, he thought, "This spider is alive too," and did not step on it.

The Buddha remembered this. And he thought he would help this man out of Hell. On a lotus leaf nearby, there was a spider of Paradise, and it was making a beautiful silver thread. The Buddha took that thread and let it down all the way to Hell.

Commentary 3

The climb and the fall

Kandata was in the Pond of Blood in Hell. All around him it is pitch dark and very quiet. Then a single silver thread came down from the sky. Kandata was very happy. He thought that if he climbed this thread, he could get out of Hell.

Kandata held the thread with both hands and began to climb up. But Paradise is very far away. Kandata got tired, and, still holding on to the thread, he looked down. He can't see the Pond of Blood anymore. Kandata laughed. "I've made it! I've made it!"

But when he looks down, a lot of people are climbing up the same thread. They are in a long line, like ants. It is a very thin thread. If this goes on, it will break. Kandata said in a loud voice, "This thread is mine. Get down! Get down!"

It was just then. The thread broke with a snap, right where Kandata was. Turning round and round, Kandata fell down into dark Hell. The Buddha saw all of it. Then, with a sad face, he began to walk again.

Commentary 4

Three things to notice

There are three things in this story I want you to look at.

The first is the way it is told. This story is written in very polite language, with "gozaimasu." And the person telling it does not say clearly even what the Buddha felt. They only say, "It was probably like this."

The second is the place where the thread broke. Kandata thought the thread would break in the middle. But where it broke was the place where Kandata was. The thread did not break even when many people climbed it, but it broke when Kandata said "Get down."

The third is the lotus flowers. The story begins with white flowers and a nice smell. And it ends with almost the same sentence. Only the time is different. The morning is now almost noon. Even when Kandata falls into Hell, nothing changes for the lotus flowers.

Do you think it could not be helped that Kandata fell? Or do you think it was too harsh?
