About The Spider's Thread

It is morning in Paradise. The Buddha is strolling alone along the edge of the lotus pond. The flowers blooming in the pond are all pure white, and a sweet scent fills the air around them. Far below that pond, through water as clear as crystal, the bottom of Hell could be seen.

This time, the story is Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's "The Spider's Thread." It appeared in 1918, in the first issue of Akai Tori, a magazine for children. It is the first work Akutagawa wrote for children. It is a very short story, and it has only three scenes. Paradise, Hell, and then Paradise again.

It is said to be based on one part of "Karma," a Buddhist story written by an American author. In the original story, the Buddha speaks to the man in Hell and explains his teaching. But Akutagawa's Buddha does not say a single word to the very end.

Commentary 2

A thief, a spider, and a silver thread

At the bottom of Hell, there was a man called Kandata. He was a great thief who had killed people and set fire to houses. But he had done just one good thing. Deep in a forest, when he was about to step on a small spider and kill it, he thought again, "Small as it is, this too is a living thing," and he let it live.

The Buddha remembers this and thinks that, if he can, he will rescue this man from Hell. Just then, on a lotus leaf beside him, a spider of Paradise was spinning a beautiful silver thread. The Buddha gently takes the thread in his hand and lowers it, from between the white flowers, straight down to the bottom of Hell far below.

Commentary 3

The climb and the fall

At that time, Kandata was floating and sinking in the Pond of Blood with the other sinners. All around him it is pitch dark, and as quiet as the inside of a grave. Then, from the far, far sky, a single silver thread came sliding smoothly down. Kandata claps his hands with joy. If he climbs this, he will surely be able to get out of Hell.

Kandata gripped the thread firmly with both hands and began to climb, up and up. But Hell and Paradise are tens of thousands of ri apart. Tired, Kandata hung from the thread partway up and looked down. The Pond of Blood is already hidden at the bottom of the darkness. In a voice he had not used for many years, Kandata laughed, "I've made it! I've made it!"

But then he suddenly notices that, on the lower part of the thread, more sinners than he can count are climbing up like a line of ants. It is a thin thread that looks ready to break even with him alone on it. Kandata yelled in a loud voice. "Hey, you sinners! This spider's thread is mine. Who on earth did you ask before you came climbing up? Get down! Get down!"

It happened at that very moment. The thread, which had been perfectly fine until then, broke with a snap at the place where Kandata was hanging. Spinning round and round like a top, Kandata falls headfirst to the bottom of the darkness. The Buddha, who had been watching the whole thing from beginning to end, made a sad face and began to stroll again.

Commentary 4

Three things to notice

Here are three things to notice.

The first is the way the story is told. This story is told in very polite language, with "gozaimasu." And the narrator says "no de gozaimashō" again and again. Even what the Buddha thought is not said clearly. The narrator only imagines: it was probably like this.

The second is the place where the thread breaks. Kandata was worried that the thread would break in two in the middle. But where it broke was exactly the place where he himself was hanging. The thread had been perfectly fine even with hundreds and thousands of people climbing it, and it broke the moment he shouted a few words.

The third is the lotus flowers. The story begins with white flowers and a sweet scent, and ends with almost the same sentence. Only the time has changed. Paradise, where it was morning, is now close to noon. The lotus flowers do not care in the least that one man has fallen back into Hell. They are only swaying gently at the Buddha's feet.

Do you think Kandata deserved to fall? Or do you think it was too harsh?
