About Toshishun

It is a spring evening. Under the gate of a city in old China, a young man is standing. His name is Toshishun. He was the child of a rich family, but he has used up all his money. Today he has no place even to sleep. Then a strange old man came and asked, "What are you thinking about?" "Toshishun" is a story that starts here.

The person who wrote it is Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. It came out in a children's magazine in 1920. Akutagawa is also the person who wrote "The Spider's Thread." These two are very famous among the stories Akutagawa wrote for children.

There is an old Chinese story that this story is based on. But Akutagawa changed the end of the story. I will tell you later how he changed it.

Commentary 2

Gold Under the Shadow

The old man said to Toshishun, "At night, dig at the place where the head of your shadow is." When Toshishun did just that, a lot of gold came out of the ground. Toshishun soon became the richest man in the city.

Toshishun bought a big house and had a party every day. Many people who did not talk to Toshishun before came to have fun too. But when his money ran out after three years, no one came anymore. There is no one who will give him even a glass of water.

Toshishun met the old man under the gate again and became rich again. But again, in three years, he lost all his money. When the old man came the third time, Toshishun said, "I don't need money anymore." "People are only kind to those who have money. I've had enough." Then, seeing that the old man was a hermit, he asked, "Please make me your pupil."

Commentary 3

The Mountain, the Rule, the Cry

The old man's name was Tekkanshi. He was a hermit who lived on a mountain. Tekkanshi took Toshishun to the top of the mountain and said, "Sit here until I come back. Whatever happens, you must not make a sound."

When Toshishun was alone, a tiger and a big snake came to him. A strong wind blew, and lightning struck too. Toshishun was killed and went to Hell. In Hell, too, very painful and hard things were done to him. But Toshishun did not say anything.

Then the King of Hell brought two horses. The faces of the horses were the faces of his dead father and mother. The demons beat the two horses hard. Toshishun closed his eyes. Just then, he heard a small voice. "Don't worry about us. If you are happy, that's all we want. You don't have to say anything." It was his mother's voice.

Toshishun forgot his promise and ran to the horse. Then, crying, he said in a loud voice, "Mother."

When he came to, Toshishun was standing under the gate again. He could not become a hermit. But Toshishun said, "I'm glad I couldn't." And he said, "From now on, I will live honestly."

Commentary 4

Three Things to Notice

There are three things in this story I want you to look at.

The first is that the same thing happens many times. Toshishun becomes rich and loses his money. That happened twice. The third time, Toshishun chooses something different. It is the same on the mountain. He could bear his own pain many times. But the last one he could not bear.

The second is what Tekkanshi says. Afterwards, Tekkanshi said this: "If you had said nothing, I meant to kill you." Making a sound was the right thing.

The third is the difference from the original story. In the Chinese story too, the man makes a sound and cannot become a hermit. That was "a regrettable failure." But Akutagawa wrote that making a sound was a good, human thing.

If you were Toshishun, would you have made a sound?
