About Toshishun

One spring evening, under the west gate of Luoyang, the capital of old China, a young man is looking up at the sky blankly. His name is Toshishun. He used to be a rich man's son, but he has used up all his money and has no place to sleep tonight. Then a strange old man comes and asks, "What are you thinking about?" Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's "Toshishun" is a story that begins with this meeting.

It came out in 1920, in Akai Tori, a magazine for children. Akutagawa was twenty-eight. Like "The Spider's Thread," it is still read by many people today as a famous work Akutagawa wrote for children.

It is based on a story from the Tang dynasty in China called "The Tale of Du Zichun." But Akutagawa changed the last part a lot. I will tell you later what he changed.

Commentary 2

Gold Under the Shadow

The old man says to Toshishun: Stand in the evening sun, and in the middle of the night, dig at the place where the head of your shadow is. A cartload of gold will come out. When he did just that, Toshishun became the richest man in Luoyang in one day.

Toshishun buys a big house and has a party almost every day. People who until then did not even say hello when they met him on the street come to have fun with him morning and night. But when his money ran out after about three years, no one came anymore. There is not even anyone who will give him a glass of water.

Toshishun stands under the gate again, meets the old man again, and becomes rich again. And again, in about three years, he loses everything. When the old man came the third time, Toshishun said no, he did not want money anymore. He says he is tired of people. Then he realizes the old man is a hermit, and asks to be made his pupil.

Commentary 3

The Mountain, the Rule, the Cry

The old man's name is Tekkanshi. He was a hermit who lived on a mountain called Mount Emei. Tekkanshi takes Toshishun to the top of the mountain and makes him promise just one thing. Sit here until I come back. Whatever happens, you must never make a sound. If you speak even one word, you cannot become a hermit.

Now that Toshishun is alone, a tiger and a white snake jump at him. A storm comes, and lightning strikes. He is killed by a soldier of the gods, and Toshishun's soul falls into hell. In front of Enma, the King of Hell, he suffers many terrible things. Even so, Toshishun does not make a single sound.

Then King Enma had two thin horses brought in. Their bodies are horses, but their faces are his dead father and mother. The demons beat the two horses with iron whips. Toshishun shuts his eyes tight. Just then, he heard a small voice. "You don't have to worry. Whatever happens to us, if you can be happy, that is all we want. If there is something you do not want to say, stay silent." It was his mother's voice.

Toshishun forgets his promise and runs up to the horse. He held its neck and, with tears running down, cried out one word: "Mother."

When he came to, Toshishun was standing under the same gate as before. He had not become a hermit. But Toshishun says he is glad he could not. And from now on, he says, he means to live like a human being, honestly.

Commentary 4

Three Things to Notice

Here are three things to notice.

The first is repetition. He becomes rich and loses everything. That happens twice, and the third time Toshishun chooses a different path. It is the same on the mountain. He could bear pain to his own body again and again, but the very last one he could not bear.

The second is what Tekkanshi says. "If you had stayed silent, I meant to take your life at once." In other words, in this test, speaking was the right thing to do. The promise itself, that he could become a hermit if he stayed silent, was there to test Toshishun.

The third is the difference from the original story. In the Chinese "Tale of Du Zichun," too, the hero makes a sound and cannot become a hermit. But there it is written as a regrettable failure. Akutagawa turned that around. He wrote the cry not as a failure, but as a sign of being human.

If you were Toshishun, would you have spoken at that moment?
