Commentary 2
Two hunters and a restaurant in the mountains
Two young men came from Tokyo to the mountains to hunt. They have new guns, and two big white dogs with them. But there are no birds or animals in the mountains. They got separated from the man guiding them, too. And the two dogs suddenly fell down and died. Then the two men talked about money: "That's a loss of 2,400 yen," "That's a loss of 2,800 yen."
They lost their way, and they were getting hungry too. Then, behind them, there was a Western restaurant. Its name is "Wildcat House." When they go inside, there are a lot of doors. On every door, an order is written. "This is a restaurant of many orders. Please understand."
"Make your hair neat and take the mud off your shoes." "Please put your guns here." "Please take off your hats, coats and shoes." "Please leave your glasses and wallets here too." Each time, the two men think of a reason. "It's a restaurant with a lot of rules." "Some important person must be here."
Commentary 3
Cream, salt, and the truth
The orders still go on. "Please put cream on your face, hands and feet." "Please put perfume on your head." That perfume smelled like vinegar. And on the last door, this was written: "Please rub a lot of salt into your whole body."
At last, the two men understood. The one giving the orders was the restaurant. This is not a restaurant where you eat food. It was a restaurant that makes the people who come into food and eats them. The door behind them will not open anymore. Through the keyhole, two blue eyes are looking at them. The two men shook and cried.
Just then, the two dogs, which should have been dead, broke the door and came in. In the dark place at the back, there was a voice: "Nyaao." And the restaurant disappeared. The two men were standing in the grass. The two men went home to Tokyo. But their faces, which had crumpled up with fear, never went back to the way they were.
Commentary 4
Three things to notice
There are three things in this story I want you to look at.
The first is the title. When you hear "The Restaurant of Many Orders," you think it is a popular restaurant where customers order a lot. The two men thought so too. But in the end, the same words come to mean exactly the opposite.
The second is the reasons the two men think of. Every time there is a strange order, the two men think of a reason that suits them. The cream is to keep their hands from getting rough. The smell of vinegar is because someone at the restaurant made a mistake. There were many times when they could have thought something was wrong, but the two men did not stop even once.
The third is the sound of the wind. Before the restaurant appears, a strong wind blows, and the grass and trees make noises. After the restaurant disappears, exactly the same sentence comes once more. Perhaps only between these two winds were the two men in a different world.
After their frightening experience, did the two men change when they went back to Tokyo? Or did nothing change?
Commentary 1
About The Restaurant of Many Orders
In the mountains, there is a nice Western restaurant. On the glass door, these words are written in gold: "Everyone, please come in. There is no need to hold back at all." The two men, who were hungry, were very happy and opened the door.
Today's story is "The Restaurant of Many Orders." The person who wrote it is Kenji Miyazawa. In 1924, it came out in a book with the same name. At that time, Kenji was twenty-eight. This is the only book of children's stories that Kenji brought out while he was alive.
Kenji wrote stories while he was a school teacher in Iwate. A thousand copies of this book were made, but almost none of them sold. Kenji bought two hundred copies himself. But now it is a story that almost everyone in Japan knows.
