About The Restaurant of Many Orders

Deep in the mountains, far from any village, a stately Western restaurant stands all on its own. On its glass door, these words were written in gold letters: "Everyone, please come in. There is no need to hold back at all." The two men, their stomachs empty, practically danced for joy and pushed the door open.

This work is Kenji Miyazawa's "The Restaurant of Many Orders." In 1924 it was published as part of a collection of children's stories with the same title. Kenji was twenty-eight at the time. It was the one and only collection of children's stories he published in his lifetime.

While teaching in Iwate, Kenji threw himself into his writing. Most of the first printing of a thousand copies went unsold, and Kenji is said to have ended up buying two hundred copies himself. Today, it has become a story that every Japanese person knows.

Commentary 2

Two hunters and a restaurant in the mountains

Two young gentlemen came from Tokyo to hunt. They carry gleaming guns on their shoulders and have two dogs in tow, just like polar bears. But not a single bird or beast is to be found. They become separated from the hunter acting as their guide, and the two dogs get dizzy, foam at the mouth and breathe their last. What sprang from the two men's lips at that moment was a reckoning of money: "That's a loss of 2,400 yen," "That's a loss of 2,800 yen."

Just as they have lost their way and their hunger is growing, a Western restaurant suddenly appears behind them, as if out of nowhere. The name of the house is "Wildcat House." When they step inside, door follows door, layer upon layer, and on each one an order is written. "This house is a restaurant of many orders, so we ask you kindly to understand."

Comb your hair and get the mud off your shoes. Put down your guns. Take off your hats, overcoats and shoes. Remove metal things such as glasses and wallets. Each time, the two men squeeze out some plausible piece of reasoning. "It's a place strict about manners." "No one eats a meal carrying a gun." "There must be some very distinguished person here."

Commentary 3

Cream, salt, and the truth

The orders go on still. Rub cream into your face, hands and feet. Sprinkle perfume over your head. But that perfume gave off a smell like vinegar. And on the last door, it said: Please rub plenty of the salt in the pot well into your whole body.

At this point, the two men finally realize it. The one giving the orders was the restaurant. It was not a restaurant that serves food to its guests, but a restaurant that turns those who come into dishes and devours them. The door behind them will no longer budge an inch. Through the keyholes, two blue eyeballs are fixedly watching them. The two men shook with terror and could only break down in tears.

It was then. The two dogs, which should have been dead, burst through the door and leapt in. In the darkness at the back, a single cry: "Nyaao." The restaurant vanished like smoke, and the two men were left standing in the grass. The hunter too returns, and the two set off back to Tokyo. But their faces alone, crumpled like waste paper, never returned to the way they were.

Commentary 4

Three things to notice

I would like to point out three highlights of this work.

First, the title. Hearing "The Restaurant of Many Orders," anyone would picture a thriving restaurant where customers order busily. The two men, too, understood it that way: "It seems to be doing quite well," they say. Yet at the end, the very same words take on the exact opposite meaning.

Second, the two men's self-justification. Each time a strange order appears, they put an interpretation on it that suits them. The cream is to keep the skin from cracking. Taking off metal is because electricity is used in the cooking. The smell of vinegar is a slip by the staff. Although there were countless chances to grow suspicious, the two men never once stop to think.

Third, the depiction of the wind. Just before the restaurant appears, the wind comes blowing with a roar, the grass rustles, the leaves rattle, and the trees thump and thud. And after the restaurant has vanished, a sentence identical down to the last word appears again. Perhaps it was only in the interval between these two winds that the two men had strayed into another world.

Of this work, Kenji said that it was the irrepressible resentment that village children feel toward the civilization of the city and its self-indulgent class. Did the two men, having tasted terror, really change after their return to Tokyo? Or did nothing at all change? The answer is left to the reader.
