Commentary 2
Five treasures, a sooty bowl, and a fake branch
The second part is the story of those treasures. What Kaguya-hime asked for was five treasures. The Buddha's stone bowl. A branch of jewels on a mountain in a faraway sea. Clothes that do not burn even in a fire. A shining jewel on a dragon's neck. A shell that swallows have. Every one of them is a thing that no one knows really exists.
The first man did not go to India. He pretended to go, and waited three years. Then he brought an old, pitch-black bowl that had been in a mountain temple. If it were the real one, it should be shining. Kaguya-hime gave the bowl back at once.
The second man pretended to go off by ship, and three days later he came back without telling anyone. Then he had craftsmen make a fake branch, taking a thousand days. That branch looked just like the real one. The man had even thought up a story about a long journey. The old man believed him completely and started getting ready for the wedding. Kaguya-hime was thinking, without a word.
The ones who came just then were those craftsmen. So the lie came out. Kaguya-hime was very happy and gave the branch back. The man was so ashamed that he went deep into the mountains and never came back.
Commentary 3
The robe, the dragon, and the swallow's nest
The third man is rich. He paid a lot of money to a merchant in China and at last bought the clothes that do not burn. They are a beautiful blue, and the tips of the fur shine gold. But when they were put into the fire, the clothes burned up right away.
The fourth man said to his men, "Don't come back until you have got the dragon's jewel." But his men were afraid of the dragon and ran away. So the man went to sea himself. Then a terrible storm came. When he came back, the man was sick, and his eyes were badly swollen.
The fifth man got into a basket and had himself lifted up to the swallows' nest. When he put his hand into the nest, there was something hard. Just as he was happy, the rope broke, and he fell down. What was in his hand was old swallow droppings. This man became very sick and died.
And so, none of the five could bring a treasure. And at last, even the Emperor heard about Kaguya-hime. The second part ends here.
Commentary 4
Three things to notice
There are three things in this story I want you to look at.
The first is the way they fail. The two who lied were only put to shame. The one who used money lost his money. But the one who went to sea himself became sick, and the one who put his own hand into the nest died. The harder a man tried, the worse things went for him.
The second is wordplay. The first man did not give up even after he threw away the bowl. "Hachi o suteru," to throw away a bowl, and "haji o suteru," to throw away one's shame. The sounds are very similar. The fifth man could not get the shell, so "kai ga nai": "there is no shell," and also "it was no use." The story explains that words we still use today were born here. Whether that is true, no one knows.
The third is Kaguya-hime's feelings. In the second part, Kaguya-hime's feelings are written only three times. She looks at the fake branch and thinks without a word. The lie comes out, and she is very happy. And when she hears that the fifth man has died, she feels a little sorry for him. Please remember this "a little."
Did the five men fail because they were bad? Or was what Kaguya-hime asked for too cruel?

About The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Part 2
Here is a branch of a tree. Its roots are silver, its branches are gold, and its fruit are white jewels. A man is saying, "I brought this back from a mountain in a faraway sea." "I was caught in a storm. My food ran out too." Just then, some craftsmen came and said this: "We worked for a thousand days, but we still haven't been paid."
Today is the second part of "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter." It is the oldest story in Japan, written more than a thousand years ago. We have rewritten it in easy Japanese and divided it into three parts.
In the first part, Kaguya-hime, who was inside a bamboo, became a beautiful adult. Five men come to the house almost every day. Kaguya-hime said, "I will marry the person who brings me the thing I want to see."
