About The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Part 2

There is a branch of a tree, with roots of silver, a stem of gold, and fruit made of white jewels. A man is telling how he brought it back from a mountain in a faraway sea. How he was caught in storms, how the food ran out. Just then, some craftsmen came along and said: We worked for a thousand days, and we still have not been paid.

This time, it is Part 2 of "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter." We have rewritten the oldest story in Japan, written more than a thousand years ago, in easy modern Japanese, and we are bringing it to you in three parts.

In Part 1, Kaguya-hime, who was found inside a bamboo, grew into a beautiful adult. Five men come to the house almost every day. Kaguya-hime answered that she would marry the one who brought her the thing she wished to see.

Commentary 2

Five treasures, a sooty bowl, and a fake branch

Part 2 is the story of those treasures. The Buddha's stone bowl. A branch of jewels, found on a mountain in a faraway sea. A robe that does not burn, made from the skin of a fire-rat. A jewel that shines on a dragon's neck. A shell that swallows are said to have. Every one of them was a thing that no one even knew really existed.

The first man has no intention of going to India from the start. He pretended to go, waited three years, and brought an old bowl, black with soot, that had been in a mountain temple. If it were the real one, it should be shining. Kaguya-hime gave the bowl back at once.

The second man pretends to set out by ship, and three days later he secretly comes back. Then he gathered craftsmen and had them make a fake branch, taking a thousand days over it. The finished branch looks just like the real one. He had even prepared a story of a long journey. The old man believes him completely and starts getting ready for the wedding. Kaguya-hime fell silent, deep in thought.

The ones who came just then were those craftsmen. In this way the lie came out, and Kaguya-hime, overjoyed, gave the branch back. The man was so ashamed that he could not bear it; he went deep into the mountains and did not come back.

Commentary 3

The robe, the dragon, and the swallow's nest

The third man is rich. He sent a lot of money to a merchant in China and at last got hold of the fire-rat robe. It is a deep blue, and the tips of the fur shine gold. But when it was put into the fire, the robe went up in flames and burned away.

The fourth man gives his men an order. You must not come back until you have got the dragon's jewel. But his men were afraid of the dragon and ran away. So he goes out to sea himself, and he is caught in a terrible storm. When he finally came back, the man was sick, and his eyes were swollen as if two plums had been stuck on them.

The fifth man gets into a basket and has himself pulled up to where the swallows' nest is. When he put his hand into the nest, he was able to grab something hard. The moment he rejoiced, the rope broke, and down he falls. What was in his hand was old swallow droppings. This man becomes seriously ill and dies.

And so, not one of the five was able to bring a treasure. And at last, word of Kaguya-hime reaches the ears of the Emperor too. Part 2 ends here.

Commentary 4

Three things to notice

Here are three things to notice.

The first is the way they fail. The two who lied got away with nothing worse than being put to shame. The one who relied on money loses his money. But the one who went out to sea himself became sick, and the one who put his own hand into the nest lost his life. The more serious a man was, the worse the thing that happens to him.

The second is wordplay. Even after he threw the bowl away, the first man still did not give up. "Hachi o suteru," to throw away a bowl, and "haji o suteru," to throw away one's shame. The fifth man could not get the shell, so "kai ga nai": "there is no shell," and also "it was no use." The story makes a show of explaining that words still used today were born here. Whether that is true, no one knows.

The third is Kaguya-hime's feelings. In Part 2, they are written about only three times. Faced with the fake branch, she falls silent, deep in thought. When the lie comes out, she is overjoyed. And when she hears that the fifth man has died, she feels a little sorry for him. Please remember this "a little."

Were the five men's failures the fault of the five men? Or was what Kaguya-hime asked for too cruel? In the second half, two people talk this question over.

Part 2 · Conversation: Mio and Ken

Conversation 1

Whose fault was it?

From here on, it's the two of us. I'm Mio.

I'm Ken. That question just now, what do you think, Mio? Is it the five men who are in the wrong? Or Kaguya-hime?

I think it's the five men. I mean, it's nothing but lies and fakes.

I think what Kaguya-hime asked for is too cruel.

What, it's Kaguya-hime's fault?

Well, she's telling them to go and get things that nobody even knows exist.

Well, that's true, but...

Because of that, one of them gets sick, and one of them dies.

But you know, not one of them came and told her honestly.

Honestly?

Like, "I looked for it, but it wasn't there."

Ah. True, nobody says that.

Conversation 2

Three years of waiting, a thousand days of faking

Take the first man: he just pretended to go and waited three years.

I wonder what he was doing for those three years.

And on top of that, what he brought was an old bowl, black with soot.

A real one is supposed to shine, so of course she would know right away.

The second man is even worse. He spends a thousand days having a fake made.

He could have used those thousand days to go and look for the real one.

Right? He even makes up a story of his journey. Caught in storms, eating the roots of grass, attacked by something like a demon.

He is good at telling stories, though. The old man believed him completely.

The old man, he's so quick to decide again.

He hasn't changed since Part 1.

So, do you remember how the lie came out?

He hadn't paid the craftsmen yet.

Right. He makes them work for a thousand days, and he doesn't pay them.

Come on, at least pay them.

He lies, and he doesn't pay. Could you marry a man like this?

Conversation 3

Why did Kaguya-hime fall silent?

No, I couldn't. But look at Kaguya-hime in that scene.

The part where she falls silent, deep in thought?

Yes. She thinks it's the real one, and she's troubled.

True, she is troubled.

In other words, she was seriously thinking that if the real one came, she would marry.

That's your opinion from Part 1, Ken.

Yeah. I think she meant to keep the promise she made herself.

I think the opposite. She was troubled because she doesn't want to marry.

So that's why she's overjoyed when the lie comes out?

Yes. Someone who is that glad can't possibly want to marry.

Hmm. You may be right about that.

Conversation 4

The ones who really tried

Then what do you think of the third man?

I feel sorry for him. He didn't lie.

True, he's the one who got cheated.

The merchant tells him, "I need more money," and he gladly sends it.

He's good-natured, isn't he? But he doesn't look for it himself.

The fourth man, too, makes his men go at first.

Saying, "Don't come back until you've got it."

And so his men got scared of the dragon and ran off somewhere.

His men are the smartest ones.

But after that, he gets on a ship himself.

In the storm, he was crying and praying.

When he finally gets back, he's sick, and his eyes are swollen like plums.

From there on, it gets harder and harder to laugh.

The fifth man put his hand into the nest himself. He's the most earnest one.

And yet what was in his hand was old swallow droppings.

And then he dies. And he gets turned into a pun, "kai ga nai," of all things.

That part is hard for me too.

It says Kaguya-hime felt a little sorry for him.

"A little," you know.

A person has died, and it's "a little." That's what bothers me.

I wonder what kind of person Kaguya-hime is.

We don't know yet. It ends with "word of her reached the Emperor's ears too," right?

I wonder if she'll ask the Emperor for some treasure too.

That's something to look forward to in Part 3.

And you, listening: what do you think?

Well then, see you at the next story.

Goodbye.
