About Rashomon

It is evening on a rainy day. A man is waiting under a big gate for the rain to stop. This man has lost his job. He has nowhere to go. He has no money and no food. If things go on like this, he will die. Is becoming a thief the only way? "Rashōmon" is the story of this man.

The person who wrote it is Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. It came out in a magazine in 1915. At that time, Akutagawa was twenty-three and still a university student. At first, not many people read it. But now it is a very famous story that all high school students in Japan read at school.

Do you know Akira Kurosawa's film "Rashomon"? That film used the name and the gate from this story. But the story of the film is another story by Akutagawa, "In a Grove."

This story is based on an old story from about nine hundred years ago. The man in the old story was a thief from the start. But the man in Akutagawa's story cannot become a thief yet. He keeps wondering what to do. This is the interesting part of this story.

Commentary 2

The Gate and the Old Woman

The story is set in Kyoto long ago. There had been many bad things, such as earthquakes and fires, and the city had become very poor. Rashōmon was broken too, and no one would fix it. Foxes and thieves lived there, and it had become a place where dead people were thrown away.

This man, who is called "the servant" in the story, climbed a ladder to the top of the gate to spend the night. Then he sees a fire. Someone is there. Among many dead people, there was a thin old woman. The old woman was pulling out a dead woman's hair, one hair at a time.

Commentary 3

Anger, an Excuse, a Robbery

Seeing that, the man became very angry. A little while ago he had been thinking about becoming a thief, but at this moment, he felt he never wanted to do anything bad.

The man caught the old woman and asked, "What were you doing?" The old woman answered. "I'm making a wig with this hair. This woman, too, did bad things when she was alive. She sold snake, saying it was fish. If she didn't, she would die, so it couldn't be helped. For me, too, it can't be helped."

Hearing this, the man changed his mind. He decided what he could not decide under the gate. The man said, "Then it's all right if I take your kimono. I'll die too if I don't." And he took the old woman's kimono and went down the ladder.

Commentary 4

Three Things to Notice

There are three things in this story I want you to look at.

The first is that the man's feelings change quickly. He is unsure, he gets angry, and then he becomes a thief. What the man used was the old woman's words, "it can't be helped." He gave the old woman's own words straight back to her.

The second is the pimple. There is a big pimple on the man's face, and he is always touching it. But when he decides to become a thief, his hand leaves the pimple. It is a sign that he is not unsure anymore.

The third is the last sentence. "Where the servant went, no one knows." It means that no one knows where the man went. When it first came out in the magazine, it was different. It said that the man went to the city to steal. But later, Akutagawa rewrote that part. Did the man become a thief? Or did he come back?

If you were this man, where would you go after climbing down the ladder?
