About Rashomon

One rainy evening, a man is waiting under a large gate for the rain to stop. He has nowhere to go. Just a few days ago, he was sent away from the house where he had worked for a long time. Should he die with nothing to eat, as things are, or become a thief? Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's "Rashōmon" is a story about a short time in the life of a man who has to choose one of these two.

This story came out in 1915. Akutagawa was twenty-three and still a university student. It was printed in a magazine, but at that time, almost no one paid attention to it. But today it is always in high school textbooks, and it is one of the most read short stories in Japan.

By the way, Akira Kurosawa's film "Rashomon" borrows only its title and the gate scenes from this story. The content of the film comes from another of Akutagawa's stories, "In a Grove."

This story is based on an old tale. It is a tale in a book from the Heian period called the Konjaku Monogatarishū. But the man in the original tale had come to the capital to steal from the start. Akutagawa changed him into a man who is still unsure and cannot become a thief yet. Almost everything that makes this story interesting comes from that change.

The Gate and the Old Woman

The story takes place in Kyoto in the Heian period. Bad things kept happening, such as earthquakes, fires and famines, when there is no food, and the city had fallen into ruin. Rashōmon, too, had been left broken and unrepaired. Foxes and thieves had moved in, and in the end it had become a place where dead bodies that no one would take away were thrown.

This man, who is called "the servant" in the story, climbs a ladder to the top of the gate to spend the night. There, where no one should be, a fire is burning. Crouching among the dead bodies was an old woman with white hair, as thin as a monkey. The old woman was pulling the hair out of a dead woman's head, one hair at a time.

Anger, an Excuse, a Robbery

Seeing that, the man becomes furious. A little while ago he was wondering whether to become a thief, but at this moment, the story says, he would have chosen death without a second thought.

The man holds the old woman down and asks what she was doing. The old woman answers. She was going to pull out this hair to make a wig. This woman too, when she was alive, used to sell dried snake, saying it was dried fish. If she had not, she would have died, so it could not be helped. What I am doing cannot be helped either. So this woman will surely forgive me.

As he listens to this, a certain courage is born in the man's heart. It is the courage that would not come at all under the gate. The man says: "Then you won't hold it against me if I take your kimono. I'll die too if I don't." Then he took the old woman's kimono, kicked her down, and went down the ladder.

Three Things to Notice

Here are three things to notice.

The first is how the man's feelings change many times in a short time. Doubt, anger, and then stealing. Inside this man, good and bad are not fixed. They switch places quickly, with the situation at the time and one reason. And the reason the man used was the very "it can't be helped" that the old woman said to protect herself, given straight back to her.

The second is the pimple. The man has a big pimple on his right cheek, and all through the story he keeps touching it because it bothers him. But when he decides to become a thief, his hand leaves the pimple. People often talk about this scene as the sign that a young man who could not decide has stopped hesitating.

The third is the last sentence. "Where the servant went, no one knows." In fact, the ending was different when the story first appeared in the magazine. It said clearly that the man was hurrying through the rain to the streets of Kyoto to rob people. A few years later, when it was put into a book, Akutagawa rewrote that part and erased where the man was going. Did the man go on to be a thief, or did he turn back somewhere? That is left for the reader to think about.

If you were this man, where would you go after climbing down the ladder?
