Commentary 2
A trick, an eel, and a funeral
The fox's name is Gon. Gon lives in a hole in the forest. And every day he comes to the village and plays tricks. He digs up the potatoes in the fields and takes the red peppers from the houses.
The man in the river is Hyōjū. When Hyōjū went away, Gon wanted to play a trick. He throws the fish in the basket into the river. Last of all, he put a big eel in his mouth. The eel wound itself around Gon's neck. Just then, Hyōjū came back and shouted loudly. Gon ran away with the eel.
About ten days later, there was a funeral in the village. The one who died was Hyōjū's mother. That night, Gon thought. His mother was sick, and she probably said she wanted to eat eel. But Gon took the eel away. "I wish I hadn't played that trick."
Commentary 3
Sardines, chestnuts, and the last day
Hyōjū had lived with his mother, just the two of them. Now he is alone. "He's the same as me." Gon decided to do something for Hyōjū. First, he took some sardines from the basket of a man who sells sardines and put them in Hyōjū's house. But Hyōjū was taken for a thief and got hit by the sardine seller.
After that, Gon gathered chestnuts in the hills and took them to Hyōjū's house. Some days he took matsutake mushrooms too. Gon quietly leaves them and goes home, so that Hyōjū does not see him. Hyōjū does not know who is giving them to him.
One night, Gon heard Hyōjū and Kasuke talking. Hyōjū said, "Someone leaves chestnuts every day." Kasuke said, "That's a god. Say thank you to the god." Gon thought, "But I'm the one who brought them. That's no fun."
The next day too, Gon went with chestnuts. Hyōjū saw a fox go into the house. "The fox that took the eel has come again." Hyōjū took his gun and shot Gon.
Hyōjū looked inside the house and noticed the chestnuts. "Gon, was it you? The one who always gave me chestnuts." Gon nodded, with his eyes still closed. Hyōjū dropped the gun. A little blue smoke was coming out of the gun.
Commentary 4
Three things to notice
There are three things in this story I want you to look at.
The first is Gon's "probably." That his mother wanted to eat eel is something Gon thought up. We don't know if it is true. Gon started doing things for Hyōjū because of his own idea.
The second is that the two never talk. Gon is always watching Hyōjū. He watches him at the river and on the road at night. But the two never talk, not even once. The only time Hyōjū calls Gon's name is the one time after he has shot him.
The third is the end. The story does not write down the feelings of the two, and ends with the blue smoke. When Nankichi first wrote it, it said Gon "became happy." When it came out in the magazine, that became "nodded."
When he nodded at the end, was Gon happy? What do you think?
Commentary 1
About Gon, the Little Fox
It is a river in autumn. It is just after the rain has stopped. A man has gone into the river and is catching fish. From in the grass, a small fox is watching him. This fox is all alone.
Today's story is "Gon, the Little Fox." The person who wrote it is Nankichi Niimi. It came out in a children's magazine in 1932. At that time, Nankichi was still eighteen. Nankichi died at twenty-nine. It has been in Japanese elementary school textbooks for a long time, so almost everyone knows the story.
