And so, cruelly, Toshishun had his chest pierced by swords, his face burned by flames, his tongue pulled out, his skin stripped off, was pounded with an iron pestle, boiled in a pot of oil, had his brains sucked out by poisonous snakes and his eyes eaten by hawk-eagles — he was put through every kind of torment, so many that there would be no end to counting them.
