Commentary 2
The girl in the shining bamboo
Long ago, there was an old man who lived by gathering bamboo and making things like baskets. "Taketori" means "to gather bamboo." One day, the old man found that tiny girl inside a shining bamboo. He took her home and decided to raise her together with the old woman. The girl was very small, so they put her in a basket to raise her.
After that, strange things kept happening. When the old man cut a bamboo, gold came out from inside. The next day too, and the day after that too. Little by little, the old man's family became rich.
In about three months, the girl became the same size as an adult. She was a very beautiful child. When this child was there, every part of the house became bright. Even on hard days, the old man felt well again when he saw this child's face.
Commentary 3
Kaguya-hime and the five suitors
The girl was given the name "Kaguya-hime." People all over the country talked about Kaguya-hime. Many men came around the house, not even sleeping at night. But they could not see Kaguya-hime. Even when they wrote letters, not once did an answer come.
After a while, most of them gave up. In the end, only five were left. Two were sons of the Emperor, and three were men who did important work for the country. The five came almost every day, on snowy days and on days of thunder.
One day, the old man said to Kaguya-hime, "I am already past seventy. Won't you marry one of those five?" For a while, Kaguya-hime said nothing. Then she answered like this. "I do not say I will not marry. But if I marry without knowing how the other person feels, I will surely be sorry. I will marry the person who brings me the thing I want to see."
In the evening, the five gathered, looking happy. What will Kaguya-hime ask them to bring? The first part ends here.
Commentary 4
Three things to notice
There are three things in this story I want you to look at.
The first is light. The bamboo shines, gold comes out of the bamboo, and the house becomes bright. The name "Kaguya," too, is said to come from a word that means "to shine." Around this child, it is always bright.
The second is wordplay. When the old man found the girl, he said, "She must be someone who will become my child." In old Japanese, a basket was called "ko." It is the same sound as the "ko" in "kodomo," child. A man who makes "ko" out of bamboo every day found his own "ko" inside a bamboo.
The third is Kaguya-hime's voice. In almost every scene of the first part, Kaguya-hime says nothing. The people around her just look, talk, and write letters. The first time Kaguya-hime speaks is when they talk about marriage. And her answer is neither "yes" nor "no."
Does Kaguya-hime really want to marry? Or does she want to say no?
Commentary 1
About The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter
In a bamboo grove, there is one bamboo whose lower part is shining. An old man tried cutting that bamboo. And inside there was a tiny girl. She was a very small child, about nine centimeters tall.
Today's story is "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter." It is a story written more than a thousand years ago, and no one knows who wrote it. It is said to be the oldest of all Japanese stories.
"The Tale of Genji," written about a hundred years later, called this story "the very first parent of stories." In 2013, it was also made into a Studio Ghibli film. In Japan, it is a story that almost everyone gets to know as a child.
The original text is in old Japanese, so it is difficult even for Japanese people today. So we rewrote it in easy Japanese and divided it into three parts. Today is the first part.
